My OOW19 Schedule

If you don’t know why I like Oracle Open World, read this post. If you do, you know that I usually don’t go to many sessions as there are more important things to attend and do.

However, this year seems a bit different. It seems like there are many technical sessions and interesting people that I know (some personally, some from twitter and blogs), some I have never heard talking.

So I decided to write this post and tell you which sessions I’d like to attend and why.

As always, I sometimes have free time in between and I usually prioritize networking over sessions, so if you’d like to chat, have a coffee/beer and discuss blogging, technical stuff, user groups, speaking or anything else, let me know.

Monday

Monday seems to be the lighter day (so far). These are the sessions I’ve registered to:

• Oracle User Group Champions Program – this is interesting as I’m part of the OUG community and this can bring quite a lot of benefits to OUG members
• Hands On Lab: Oracle Multitenant – I’m not sure that I will actually go to this, but I registered so I’ll have it in my calendar. I know quite a lot about this but my clients have not moved to multitenant yet, so it might be nice to join this HOL
• Analyze Oracle Database 19c SQL Tuning/SQL Performance Using SQLHC and SQL Monitoring – this is one of the few session that I don’t know the speaker, but the speaker is from Oracle support and he will be talking about 19c SQL performance which sounds interesting

Tuesday

Tuesday is going to be very interesting:

• Oracle Database 19c: In-Depth Look into the New Automatic Indexing Feature – this is Richard Foote‘s session (aka Dr. index). He’s is very well known and I read a few of his presentations in the past. It will be awesome to hear him face to face as he’s not coming to many events in North America
• Oracle Active Data Guard: Best Practices and New Features Deep Dive – this session is by some Oracle people (out of the three I know Pieter Van Puymbroeck) and since I had a few issues with Data Guard lately and wrote a few posts about it (like this one), I would like to attend this
• Ask TOM: How to Make and Test Your Application “Oracle RAC Ready” – this session is by Markus Michalewicz, and I would be really happy to hear Markus’s session after some interaction I’ve had with him over Twitter
• What’s New in Oracle Optimizer – my last session on Tuesday will be about the optimizer (which is always interesting) by Nigel Bayliss. I’ve read a few blog posts by Nigel but never heard him talk, so this would be a great opportunity. The only problem is that it’s quite late and sometimes I have other things to do in the afternoons/evenings. Hope I’ll be able to make it

Wednesday

Moving on to Wednesday:

• Hands-on Lab: Upgrade to Oracle Database 19c with the New AutoUpgrade Feature – as I upgrade a lot these days (mostly to 18c but still) I would like to hear about upgrade to 19c and the new AutoUpgrade. Also, this session is a HOL and Mike Dietrich will be there (among others), who I love talking to
• Best Practices for Upgrading to Oracle Database 19c – seems like Wednesday will be an “upgrade with Mike Dietrich” day. Again, for the same reason as the previous session, I’ll probably spend my time listening to this session
• Ask TOM: How to Get the Most from Your Oracle Active Data Guard Environment – another session about Data Guard by Pieter Van Puymbroeck
• Twenty Features You Will Miss If You Leave Oracle Database – I’ve registered to this session mainly because of the speaker, Franck Pachot. Franck (in my opinion) is one of the best database technologists these days, and started to work with PostgreSQL relatively lately, so I will be happy to hear what he has to say

Thursday

I didn’t plan to attend any sessions on Thursday as I need to leave around lunchtime, but after seeing the catalog I did register to one session:

• A Deep Dive into Oracle Database Statement Parsing – the speaker, Frits Hoogland is also one of the best database technologies out there and I read quite a few of his very detailed blog posts. I didn’t have the chance to hear him speak yet, so I decided to attend this session and leave after it
• Oracle Database 19c Automatic Indexing Demystified – I haven’t registered to this session as I will leave SF before, but if you’re interested in automatic indexing in 19c, I think this session by Franck Pachot (along with the one by Richard Foote on Tuesday) would be one of the best

How to Register

If you’re registered to Oracle Open World, you can use the links I provided. They will open the session catalog and once you’re logged in you can add sessions to your schedule (if they are not full) and you can search for other sessions. These sessions are getting full fast, so hurry and register now.
